Your back-to-school checklist

After six weeks of summer bliss, that school bell is about to ring again! Yes, time flies when you’re having fun (or rather, juggling work, childcare and everything else on top). But fear not; order is about to resume. And stocking up on new term essentials can help everyone ease back into the old routine.

We’ve pulled together a run-down of some of the must-have school items to see youngsters through the year ahead. So get you’re alarms set and coffees poured, ready for the early morning school runs… oh joy!

Name tags

Buying a school uniform is just step one in a two-step process. The next is labelling each item so items don’t end up in lost property, on another child, or never seen again.

Whether you go for sew-in tags, iron-on labels, named stickers, or just grab the nearest permanent marker, it’s a simple way to help kids keep track of their possessions.

Made-to-last school shoes

Kids spend a lot of time in their school shoes: five days a week, 39 weeks a year. So, a comfortable, well-fitting pair is a must. They can hit the playground in style with patent leather T-bar shoes or a pair of Tonvi Twin Flex shoes – both by Kickers.

Functional, supportive and stylish school shoes will let them grow in confidence, reduce slips and trips, and help them stay focused in lessons. Buy early to avoid a last-minute, back-to-school shopping spree (as perfectly demonstrated by Julia in series two of Motherland).

Weatherproof coat

Who knows what weather September will throw at us? It could be warm, wet, windy – and the rest. Make sure your little angels have outerwear that will take them from autumn into winter.

The perfect school jacket needs to be snug, hooded, well-made and something your child actually wants to wear. This Napapijri jacket may be the perfect choice for older boys.

Stylish lunch box

You’ve perfected a lunch your child will eat, but the challenge doesn’t stop there. You then need to find the perfect lunch box to put it in. It needs to keep hot food warm, cold food chilled, fruit in one piece, and reduce the risk of spillages.

Whether you go for an insulated bag or a bento-style box, you want it to be durable, simple to clean and easy to carry. Here’s a selection of kids’ lunchboxes that might tick those boxes.

Spacious backpack

At some point during primary school (we’re not sure when) kids decide their book bag just isn’t going to cut the mustard. They need a rucksack.

Which is fine, but you do need to make sure it’s size appropriate. Younger children will need less – a water bottle, lunchbox, book and raincoat. Older kids will need more – multiple books, PE kit and phone. Ideally, you’ll think about comfort first, design second. But your child might have other ideas.

Starting the back-to-school prep early helps take the pressure off and makes it easier to find the right size and style.
