5 Looks We Loved at London Fashion Week

Hold onto your hats (and your feather boas), 2023’s London Fashion Week was the most dynamic we’ve seen for some time.

Here are five of our favourite looks.

Goth Girl Vibes

They’re calling it the Wednesday Addams effect, and after the success of the Netflix series, we’re not surprised. Goth girl vibes were a major feature on the capital’s catwalk. Bora Aksu chose Wednesday as his muse, with Victorian-style lace dresses and black lippy in abundance. While black was in full effect elsewhere at Simone Rocha, Chet Lo and Edward Crutchley. Morbid? No. Moreish? Absolutely. This black lace trim vest by French Connection is an easy entry into a more macabre look. While these chunky leather lace-up boots by Ted Baker are one part rock, two parts goth, three parts Wednesday Addams.

Brighter-Than-Bright Yellow

Canary yellow – or as the Pantone Colour Trend Report describes it, Spectra Yellow – appeared in all its zingy glory at LFW. From yellow gowns, oversized blazers, full-length coats, puff sleeves and midis, it’s a hue that’s hard to ignore. Intense, electrifying, exhilarating, captivating. When it comes to yellow, words certainly don’t fail us. Not quite ready for a full yellow explosion? A hint of it will do. Try this PS Paul Smith knitted jacket for size. Made from organic cotton and featuring a bold floral yellow, it’s the perfect transitional piece to take you from winter into spring and beyond.

Feathered Friends

This season is about fun and frivolity. And, it seems, feathers. They were everywhere. On coats at David Koma, on old-style Hollywood dresses and Annie’s Ibiza, and wrapped round model’s necks at JW Anderson. But before you write this feathery trend off as unwearable anywhere other than the catwalk, think again. This black floral dress by Forever Unique is the perfect party piece. With its feather trim you’ll be on the dancefloor, on trend and on course for a great night.

Simple Combo: Sweater + Skirt

One look that translates perfectly from catwalk to the high street is the jumper paired with a favourite skirt. We can all imagine ourselves wearing that, right? And we all have pieces in our wardrobes to start creating the look.

At LFW we saw a school jumper with PVC skirt (Christopher Kane), a chunky knit with pencil skirt (Emilia Wickstead), and a hoodie with 80s-style sequined skirt. The formula is simple. But the possibilities are endless. Brighten up your day with this cropped hoodie by Versace Jeans Couture paired with a faux leather A-line button down skirt by Barbour International.

90s Chic: Dresses Over Trousers

It started in New York. And it has continued in London. The dress-over-trousers look is straight out of the 90s and will always have a place in our hearts. But as the LFW catwalks show, it’s not just a case of any dress over any trouser. The dress needs to have movement or volume – think ruffles, pleats or draping. And the trousers need to be simple and straight legged. This combination helps keep one distinct from the other and avoids too much fabric. Try this mosaic print frill dress over a pair of wide leg indigo jeans (both by French Connection) for a modern twist on a retro look.
