Sandals, Slides or Flip Flops?: Finding the Best Summer Footwear

In the summertime, it’s preferable to have lightweight shoes that are breathable and easy to slip on and off.

Footwear preference will vary from person to person, but sandals, slides and flip flops are seasonal options that you should take advantage of whilst the weather allows!

Here at Hurleys, we’re proud to offer a wide variety of designer footwear brands from the likes of BOSS, Melissa and Birkenstock, but which style of shoe is actually the best for you?

Which are the best shoes for summer?

When purchasing a pair of running shoes, comfort and ergonomics are big factors that will end up swaying your choice. However, many of us will throw on a cheap, flimsy pair of flip flops or sandals to get us through the summer.

Hurleys have developed an easy checklist to aid your search for the perfect summer shoe:

Foot Support?

Bad shoes can exacerbate any foot or heel pain, especially with prolonged wear. For this reason, it’s important that the shoes have good arch support and a cushioned but firm, contoured footbed.

Are They Durable?

If you’re planning to get a considerable amount of wear out of your summer footwear, it’s worth investing in a more robust pair of shoes to make sure they last.

However, if you’re looking for shoes to simply throw on at the beach, this might not be a concern to you.

Are they Adjustable?

Reduce irritation from friction and any sweaty discomfort by opting for footwear that can be adjusted.

Buckles are a common feature on sandals, while flip flops often offer just minor adjustability.

Sandals

Sandals are a summertime staple. From flats to platforms, they’re a great investment for warmer climates either home or away.

✔  Adjustable Straps – ideal for keeping the foot secure in the shoe without any gripping or scrunching of the foot which could cause discomfort over time.

✔ Sandals tend to have a more substantial sole, Birkenstock sandals are particularly famous for developing specialist cork footbeds that support the foot.

✔  If you’re not a fan of open-toe sandals, contrary to popular belief, socks can be worn with sandals.

✔ They don’t just have to be reserved for summer, they can be worn on an everyday basis, the success of the fluffy UGG sandals is proof of this.

Flip Flops

Grab your sunglasses because we’re going full holiday mode! Flip Flops are probably the most indicative of beach trips and poolside adventures.

Here at Hurleys, we’re big fans of fun jelly flip flops such as these Love Moschino flip flops or Ted Baker flip flops.

✔ Flip flops are typically a lightweight option that can be carried around with ease.

✔ They are very open so they are breathable and allow for air circulation – ideal for hotter climates.

✔ They are free of straps, buckles and are flat so there’s less chance of friction and blisters.

Hurleys Hint:  Choose a rubber base rather than a foam base for comfort and longevity.

Fitflop understands the concerns about foot support and combats this by fusing the substantial elements of sandals with the traditional Y-shaped flip flop strap.

These shoes are the perfect hybrid for those who still want the traditional flip flop look, with that extra bit of support.

Slides

Slides have risen to prominence in the fashion world over the past few years, so much so that they can be seen worn on a daily basis or perhaps slipped on in the house as an alternative to house slippers.

Our selection of men’s slides are a particularly trendy alternative to traditional flip flops.

✔ Quite literally kick off your shoes! Slides are extremely easy to slip on and off.

✔ Slides have a simple band that does not irritate the toes, whilst also covering and protecting a substantial amount of the foot from potential injury.

✔ Slides typically have thick soles that keep your heels off the ground level and prevent too much tension from being exerted on them.

So, what’s taking your fancy? Are you gravitating towards fun flip flops or some sleek slides? Perhaps you want to take a different route entirely.

For alternative summer shoe options, browse through our range of men’s designer trainers. They might be more suitable for walking or long wear and can still be lightweight and airy.

Similarly, look to brands such as Ted Baker for a great selection of women’s summer trainers.
