Hurley’s Predict The Next 00’s Fashion Trends To Return

Including everything from satin skirts to velour tracksuits and baker boy hats, recent years have seen a major 00’s fashion revival that’s brought iconic noughties fashion straight back into the 2020’s.

A trend that’s mainly been jumped on by Gen Z and Millennials, the revival has seen only recently outdated trends becoming fashionable once again.

But what will return next?

Armed with an extensive list of popular 00’s fashion trends, Hurley’s have made the following predictions of what we can expect to return to the world of fashion, based on what we’re already seeing and what celebrities are wearing.

Skirts Over Trousers

Despite once being a questionable look (think Disney channel stars on the red carpet in 2006), wearing a skirt over trousers is set to return in a more sleek and sophisticated fashion.

For Louis Vuitton’s AW21 collection, Virgil Abloh brought out male models wearing skirts over trousers, while Gucci have recently styled their dresses online with trousers underneath.

Low-rise everything

Love it or hate it, we’re already starting to see low rise jeans creep back into wardrobes everywhere.

It’s not only jeans we’ll be seeing make their low-rise return either, with the likes of low-rise mini skirts back on the shelves and Instagram pictures of young stars.

Hussar Jackets

Reintroduced to mainstream fashion by the likes of My Chemical Romance in 2006 and Cheryl Cole in 2009, Hussar jackets were once incredibly popular.

Now available once again via Ralph Lauren and other designer outlets, could this be the return of the hussar jackets and military-themed clothing?

Pleated mini skirts

Including everything from tennis skirts to denim skirts, ultra short pleated mini skirts ooze 00’s Mean Girls and Paris Hilton vibes, but are now making their return.

But why the sudden return to 00’s fashion?

Hurley’s spoke with vintage lifestyle expert and author Kate Beavis to get some answers.

Nostalgia and looking to the past has always been present in fashion, and over the last 40 years it has worked in 20 year cycles”, she says.

In the 1990s we wore 1970s fashion, in the 2010s we wore 1990s fashion, and now noughties trends are coming through, being worn by people of all ages especially Gen Z”.

This is partly due to TikTok and what’s trending there (think Destiny’s Child) but also it is what is available at charity shops and retro/vintage shops. Pop culture is a large influence – the Friends reunion reminded of us of Rachel’s later fashion style (when she was super cool) and Sex and The City is back so I don’t see the noughties fashion going anywhere soon”.

Nostalgia works in two ways – you either want to wear a modern version as you remember the “good old days” when you wore it OR you won’t touch it as it makes you feel old. I am 49 and looking to these trends it reminds me of going out after work, being carefree/child free so I look at it fondly”, she explained.

When it comes to what’s currently trending and what she thinks might be coming up next, Kate said:

Trends that we are seeing right now are handkerchief edged skirts and tops, asymmetric shapes, halter necks, mules, kitten heels, chokers”.

I can see accessories like the micro bag becoming more popular (especially as we look back to SATC – plus the Dior saddle bag is already becoming desirable again but I am talking super tiny like the Fendi baguette), low slung belts, belly chains. The boho look was huge (Think Sienna Miller) but also the blazer and pink suits – think Legally Blonde (seeing loads on Love Island this year in Legally Blonde pink)”, Kate explained.
